I just recently read that most of the administrative staffs come from the phys ed departments also.
When I was in high school, I was just taught by a health teacher and a visiting nurse instead of a gym teacher. I really thought the whole gym teacher thing was only from movies like Mean Girls. lol! 😂
Typically because pe teachers and health teachers rotate either days A/B/A/B or semesters when teaching middle school. At least in the 4 USDs I'm familiar with. So they do everyone at once which whichever teacher they have at the moment. And more often than not health is a female and pe is a male teacher so it's convenient there too.

I never realized this was the case for everyone until now. We had Health Education in High School and it was taught by our Basketball coach.

Quick answer: Because you are in USA and in your country people don't know how to do it properly. Many other places around the world know how to do it properly. Stop assuming you are the rule and the world the exception.

Had one of our girls' gym teachers tell the class that you could tell who used drugs because they would wear purple clothes. Guess who immediately went out and bought the cutest three piece purple skirt outfit she could find? (This was in the early 70s. I'm still oppositional, but could never fit into that outfit these days. 😢)

Just for the record. P.E. teachers are just teachers like any other teacher. They have their teaching degree and many have a maste'rs degree. When it comes to high school and middle school in the U.S. really any teacher can cover any topic. So PE teachers could also teach math for example.
@S. B. yeah well look up where American schools are in worldwide standings. It's not great for a country that claims to be the pinnacle of super powers. And while some teachers will get a bachelor's degree in teaching and then a masters in a specific area (or vice versa) it's not required in the majority of states. In fact some states don't even require a bachelor's degree! You can teach in some areas with just an associates.

B. thats how i thought it was in the US too. at least for engineering the requirement was something like 6 year degree in anything, teaching at 1-12:Also a 4 year degree in that field, and professors needed a master + x years on the job, but take this as second hand word of mouth, based on what my instructor told me.
I had an English teacher (attempt to) teach us Algebra in high school. She knew less math than us students.
I don’t get that. In the Netherlands when you teach the equivalent of highschool, you also have a degree. But it is in a specific field, like math, biology, history and gym. A teacher cannot just teach any class, each class needs a teacher with a specific skillset or knowledge. They might have the teaching skills but not the knowledge about the subjects. So an English teacher will not teach match classes, only maybe as an emergency substitute, and vice versa. And on the topic of sexed. In the Netherlands this is a subject for the biology classes and civics/human society class (not sure of the name in English).
Maybe the logic is that kids already hate gym teachers so it won't be as weird.

Nurse is licensed to treat injuries and illness, not teach. It would cause issues otherwise

I couldn't understand how my gym teacher was a gym teacher when she clearly looked like she never ran a lap in her life. She described the things we had to do like a cartwheel in gymnastics. She was my swim coach and never got in the pool. Taught golf but tried to stay in the shade. Then she had the nerve to be judgmental of students who didn't get her instructions. The trauma of it all.
@Fillory Gulf is far more expensive than soccer or basketball. You just need a ball and a street corner for the first and a ball and a hoop for the second at minimum. Golf courses are really near poor areas much less affordable, nevermind the equipment. All bets are off if you play competitive youth sports since uniforms, hotel stays, gas mileage, field/court rentals, and parent volunteering are involved.
